Mission Statement
MHS provides a rigorous liberal arts academic program. We prepare graduates for a college of choice and empower students to set and reach meaningful goals. MHS promotes teacher leadership and provides an extensive professional development program based on content, pedagogy, youth development and advisement.
Admissions
MHS is a screened public high school in lower Manhattan. Students are admitted based on a review of grades as managed by DOE High School Enrollment. In the 2022-2023 school year, MHS received over 6,000 applications for 165 9th grade seats.
Selection Criteria
Applicants to MHS, based on announced DOE policy, will be grouped by their final seventh-grade core course grades. Students will be admitted in group order, starting with students in group one: the highest 15% of their school or citywide, with an average of at least 90. Based on past admissions data, most if not all MHS seats will be offered to students in group one.

Advisory
All students are assigned to an Advisory in 9th grade that meets three times per week and remains together through 12th grade. The advisor is the student's advocate in the building, functions as the primary school contact with parents, and remains with their group for four years. Major advisory themes vary by grade and include: transition to high school, academic goal setting, community building, the college essay and application process, and celebration and reflection.
Academic Program
MHS students take four years of English, social studies, mathematics, and science, as well as three years of foreign language (Spanish and Mandarin are currently offered). There are approximately two hours of homework each night.
The 9th and 10th grade core curriculum establishes a foundation of critical thinking skills and features key content infused into all classes. The core 9/10 academic sequence includes English, Biology/Biology Inquiry, Global History, Geometry, Spanish or Mandarin, and Art as well as Physical Education and Health.
11th and 12th grade students express preferences for courses and may also enroll in Advanced Placement courses including Art History, Biology, Chemistry, Physics 2, English (Literature or Language), U.S. History, World History, Calculus BC, Spanish, Mandarin, Statistics, and Studio Art. Students can enroll in the College Now program at Baruch, BMCC, and other CUNY colleges for simultaneous high school and college credit. There are also elective courses in art (including photography, graphic design and mixed media), film, music, and computer science.
